The child's game part 3 - Teaching Independent Play
OK peeps we're going to look at moving on with the child's game and achieving independent play.

Yes, your child can be helped to play by themselves.

No more whingeing, moaning and whining...pulling at your clothes...shouting 'muuuum play with me....muuuuuum'. or "daaad play with me...daaad'. Get the picture, not attractive is it?

All they're looking for is a little attention.

So what age can you expect this to happen and be continued?

Three is an ideal age for independent play. To start before, may be a little early.

Revisit the Child's game to fine tune the process (see previous blog)

As you're playing together one-on-one, I want you to leave the room/play space, every so often i.e. 2-3 minutes and say something like, "Josh I'm just going to check on...and I'll be back in 1 minute". It's really important that you do as you say and go back in 1 minute.

As soon as you return I want you to comment on what your child is doing in a positive way so he knows you have returned e.g. 'wow you've been busy, what an amazing picture. I love your choice of colours."

Continue to do this till you see independent play. This may take 1 - 2 weeks. Have faith because it will occur.
