Here's a problem I've come across an awful lot. Refusal to take formula milk and breast refusal. This is often a 7-12-month-old issue.
Nothing causes it and you suddenly get the closed mouth, heels dug well and truly in. And nothing you do can persuade your baby, to take their milk.
It's important to make sure it's a behavioural thing and your baby is not unwell. Check with your doctor, GP or Child and Family Health Nurse.
We know that breast milk or infant formula should be the main drink until one year old.
As mothers/parents you feel rejected, but remember they are not rejecting you, just their milk. Try not to take it personally.
Those of you that have read my blog before, know that I like to go around a problem. Meeting it head on leads to locked horns and disaster!
Babies from 6 until 12 months need 3 feeds a day or 500-750 mls (17-25 fl oz)
Here are a few ideas to solve this issue:- Mix milk into cereal
- Make a rice pudding with the milk
- Make a smoothie - by adding full-fat yoghurt, that's extra calcium. Add fruit (banana and strawberries), milk, yoghurt or ice-cream and blend. Yummo.
- Make pancakes with the milk
- Make ice-cream
- Custard and fruit
If the baby is over 12 months, we can forgo the milk completely and give calcium in other ways.
