Why the Baby play Gym May Be Delaying the Roll over in Your Baby

Baby Play Gym, Baby play, rolling over, developmental delay
Last week I spent a very interesting afternoon with Miss Madeline and her parents in Sydney. She spent a lot of time on the floor but she wasn't rolling over yet and had hit the 4 month mark. After asking a lot of questions and observing her environment I had one of my lightbulb moments. Of course! Why hadn't I thought about this before?!

I hear from a lot of parents that their babies spend a lot of their time doing floor play and tummy time and yet they're not rolling over. How frustrating.

Look at this pic and see if you come to the same conclusion. The play gym is a great plaything but it's all there. No need to work for the toys. It's all up above!

As soon as we removed the arches and opened her whole floor space up, she started to move. Genius!

We put some soft toys that she could easily pick up a little distance away. Just far enough that it's attractive enough to want to reach for. Not so far away that it makes it too hard. And already within five minutes she was showing a desire to move and within a week her mum reports that she's rolled over. Awesome! How easy was that?!

Quote from Madeline's mummy: "Can I tell you what an improvement taking the arches down was!!I have been diligently doing tummy time every day about 6 times and the improvement is dramatic! She is still not 100% sure if she likes it but can now tolerate it for quite a few minutes and is holding her head higher every time. There have also been a couple of rolls! Now I am pretty sure they were a fluke but needless to say there was much clapping and high-fiving when she did it."

And here it is in all it's glory. Madeline's roll over. Yay for Miss Madeline! I felt it deserved a share.
